Exploring Creativity in Rehabilitation: Bancroft NeuroRehab's Mosaic Project
Occupational therapy at Bancroft NeuroRehab in Plainsboro, New Jersey, has taken an innovative turn, emphasizing collaboration and creativity between therapists and patients. Kari Davidowitz, COTA, CBIS, Occupational Therapy Assistant, led a year-long initiative resulting in a striking mosaic in the shape of a brain, now proudly displayed in the clinic’s lobby.
Patient-Driven Artistry
This unique project traces back to Sophia, a brain injury survivor whose passion for art extended beyond therapy sessions. Sophia’s freehand sketch of a brain became the starting point for the therapeutic project under the guidance of Kari Davidowitz. Recognizing the potential therapeutic value of merging personal interests with rehabilitation efforts, the occupational therapy team embarked on a journey that intertwined creativity and recovery.

Collaborative Creation Process
Guided by the occupational therapy team, Sophia and other patients, sorted mosaic tiles by color and arranged them on a brain-shaped canvas. Each color represented different lobes of the brain, resulting in a vibrant representation of collaboration and rehabilitation. The mosaic, now a focal point in the clinic’s lobby, stands as a collective achievement, reflecting the dedication and creativity of both patients and therapists.
Art Therapy in Occupational Therapy
“I’ve worked on a lot of projects, but I am especially proud of this one,” shares Kari Davidowitz, underlining the significance of the mosaic project.
Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the project served as a meaningful art therapy activity for patients recovering from traumatic brain injuries. This approach aligns with Bancroft NeuroRehab’s commitment to holistic rehabilitation, leveraging art to activate neuroplasticity and improve the overall well-being of patients.
